See What He Sees

*The following story is from Gareth, a Youth For Christ Juvenile Justice Ministry director located in Denver, Colorado, sharing about his experiences as a YFC Leader.

“I don’t know my dad, and my mom is in prison. My uncle and aunt adopted me after I had been to ten different foster and group homes. I call them ‘Mom’ and ‘Dad’; they raised me.”

My days are filled with coordinating, training, recruiting — all relational and all depending on the day. But one part of my day never changes. After 3 PM, I meet with youth who are hurting. Some want to talk and are searching for answers. Some want to talk only about faith and following Christ. And because of the Holy Spirit’s leading, I engage in conversations with youth like the one above.

Many of my conversations have a whole lot of listening, whether it be family issues, problems with peers, or the struggle to make good decisions.

Many of my conversations have a whole lot of listening, whether it be family issues, problems with peers, or the struggle to make good decisions. So, I sit and listen and pray silently, inviting Christ into the conversation to see where He wants it to go. Many times, I meet multiple times with a teen to work through issues, their faith, or lack of faith.

I can’t tell you how many times I sit across from a young person and I begin to feel so helpless. However, God has spoken to me to be their hope and to speak hope into their hearts and lives. You see, I could meet with these youth, hear their stories, and empathize with them, but there would be no change in my life or theirs. Yet because of Christ and His life saving grace and mercy, the conversation about the mundane is transformed into something miraculous! I cannot explain it; it is something you must experience.

The next time you catch the eye of the person beside you, or exchange pleasantries with a neighbor, invite Christ into the conversation.

The next time you gas up your car and catch the eye of the person beside you, are waiting in line beside a weary mom, or exchange pleasantries with a neighbor, invite Christ into the conversation. See what He does, hear what He hears, and allow yourself to be the hope that Jesus speaks of.
