Pursued Friendship to a Life Changed

Posted on by Vince Sarfraz

The following story was written for Youth For Christ USA. These are real YFC Stories showing how God is using YFC USA as a vehicle in raising up life-long followers of Jesus all across the nation.

At first glance, you might not think much of Casey. In fact, you might even miss him in a room full of teens.

Skinny and awkward—these were the ways Casey’s classmates described him.

Not long after the school year began, Casey got connected to Youth For Christ and its YFC Core ministry. Like many who are just discovering YFC Core, Casey was curious, but also a little nervous, to learn more about it. After attending YFC Core for the first time, the leader, Ryan, asked the question, “Out of your friends, who do you want to begin praying for and to becoming intentional about telling God’s story to?”

Casey sat quietly fidgeting, his mind completely blank. He glanced around the room and saw his peers furiously writing. He had nothing. No friends came to mind, let alone friends that needed to hear about Jesus. As the YFC Core leader, Ryan, observed the students and he noticed Casey was staring at the blank piece of paper in front of him and not writing. The leader approached Casey and reworded the question: “Who would you like to be friends with and begin sharing God’s Story with?” Casey’s eyes lit up, immediately put his head down and began making his list.

“Casey, who would you like to be friends with and begin sharing God’s Story with?”

As Casey shared his list with Ryan, it became clear that Casey had every intention of becoming friends with one of the most popular kids at school, Brady. Brady was known for his drug and alcohol abuse and was a bit intimidating. Ryan did his best to be enthusiastic for Casey, but he was a little worried. He prayed that Brady wouldn’t destroy him and implored God to intervene in their interactions. Casey and his new YFC Core friends began to pray for Brady and for Casey to have opportunities to connect with him.

It wasn’t long before their paths crossed at school, and the two actually started hanging out. As they began to share life together, they became good friends. Because they had developed a strong friendship, Casey began sharing more about his relationship with Jesus. As a result of Casey’s vulnerability with Brady, Brady saw his need for Jesus too. Brady’s life changed forever because Casey pursued a friendship with him.

After high school, Casey attended college. He left his YFC Core team and his friend Brady but chose to use everything he learned in Core as he headed to college. Casey’s leader, Ryan, has since followed up with Casey and discovered that he introduced three of his college friends to Jesus Christ, all within the first semester.

We have a beautiful hope in Jesus that needs to be shared, and pray that we can all be as obedient as Casey.
