Entranced by Sacrifice

The following story was written for Youth For Christ USA. These are real YFC Stories showing how God is using YFC as a vehicle in raising up life-long followers of Jesus all across the nation.

My father raised me to believe in nothing.

I was an atheist.

For 14 years, my life had no purpose.

But soon after I turned 14, I attended my first Youth For Christ Campus Life club. For the first time in my life, I heard about the only Person who could save me and give me something real to believe in.

At Campus Life, I heard about God for the first time.

I marveled as I listened to the leader talk about his once-empty life and his newfound purposeful life in God. He spoke with passion and enthusiasm. Supposedly, this God was full of grace, even choosing to die for every one of us! This rocked my world. I was completely astounded that I’d never heard about God in this way before.

I tried to process it: How could God know His own fatal outcome and still willingly die for me?

And an even more troubling question: Why has everyone kept this from me?

After learning about this incredible sacrifice, I took my new discovery home. I told my dad all about what I learned and asked him if he believed in God. As a result, I received a physical beating for believing what he called foolishness. He told me that I was “being brainwashed.”

I couldn’t understand it. I didn’t know why my dad hated God. Nevertheless, I knew whatever was preventing my father’s unbelief wasn’t going to stop mine.

I was entranced by this Person who sacrificed for me, who chose me, who gave my life hope, and who promised me eternal life if I followed Him.

I kept leaning in to the conversations with my YFC Campus Life leaders and eventually decided to attend Youth For Christ's Camp that summer. YFC Camp was where I made the decision to be “all in” in my relationship with Jesus.

Persecution from my earthly father created confusion, but God’s pursuit of me has made my purpose crystal clear.
